Class: Intro to Clay Handbuilding
Discover the art of shaping clay with your hands in this beginner-friendly class. Perfect for those new to ceramics or looking to explore a more tactile approach, this course introduces the foundational techniques of handbuilding — including pinch, coil, and slab construction. You’ll learn how to transform raw clay into functional or decorative pieces like bowls, mugs, or small sculptures, all without the use of a pottery wheel.
You’ll gain confidence working with clay, understanding basic design principles, and exploring surface textures. Whether you’re looking to get creative, relax, or just get a little messy, this class is a fun and accessible way to connect with clay.
Note: This is a one-night class only. Students will make clay pieces that will be fired as bisqueware and available for pick-up about 2 weeks after class. Students who want to glaze their pieces can join Mary on one of her “Sunday in the Studio with Mary” days.
Whether you are a budding or experienced artist, our classes offer a nurturing environment to develop your skills and explore your creativity. With guidance from Mary Olsen, founder of Art Start NW and Graphite Arts Center you will have the opportunity to play with clay, connect with others and express yourself through your own unique artistic vision.
This is an explorational class for all levels – beginners to advanced – everyone is welcome to come and make art with us. Children 10+ are welcome to take this class with an adult. Both adult and child must register and pay separately.
All supplies are included, but feel free to bring your own supplies, especially items to make patterns or marks with.
